The KEF LS50 sets a new standard in studio grade performance from a small incredibly well designed compact loudspeaker. KEF's 50 years of acoustical engineering innovation are no more apparent than in this anniversary speaker. Many speaker companies mount third party sourced generic drivers in an MDF rectangular box with readily available cross-over networks. Respectable results can be obtained but to portray all the information in today's high resolution digital and analog sources, more refined and sophisticated engineering is required. Getting good enough bass and reasonable dynamics from small boxes has always been a challenge.
The KEF LS50 immediately sets itself apart from the crowd with its advanced composite material curved baffle. The smooth un-interrupted front surface of the baffle preserves all the subtle details of the acoustic wave-front without interference for an exceptional smooth on and off-axis frequency response. The rear of the baffle features a carefully designed ribbed surface that minimizes any induced cavity resonance.
Modern vibration tools such as Finite Element Analysis are used to explore more effective means of reducing box colorations than the old crude methods of simple direct bracing and fiber glass filled cabinets.
Constrained Layer Damping (CLD) is a highly efficient method for absorb sound; in the KEF LS50, CLD is used between the walls, braces and the driver.
Damping panels are also used at key locations on the cabinet walls themselves.
The result is an extremely rigid and vibration free box so that you hear the pure sound coming from the driver and port and not the cabinet itself.
Most familiarly associated with reducing the drag co-efficient in automobiles, CFD is used in the KEF LS50 to model the air flow through the port. An unusual flexible flared elliptical port design was found to show the least amount of turbulence and the least amount of port resonance while delivering the maximum amount of non-boomy bass response. The bass response is vastly superior in both quantity and quality compared to other compact speakers of a similar size. This is immediately noticeable.
Key to the sound stage created by the LS50s, which is out of all proportion to its size, is the advanced Uni-Q driver with a Z-flex surround.
With engineering insight and technology gained from the Blade loudspeaker this concentric bass/midrange driver with co-axial integrated tweeter offers point source sound rendering over
a large listening area that is very fast and clean sounding.
A vast three-dimensional sound stage is created within which individual performers are separated out in space with individual
focus and correct size - another immediately noticeable quality of the KEF LS50 loudspeaker.
That the KEF LS50, within its small size limitations, neither adds nor subtracts from the original sound source makes it the perfect small room monitor. The level of technology deployed at this price point far exceeds what you might ordinarily expect and the KEF LS50 has received due global acknowledgement with no less than 14 awards from eight countries; USA, UK, France, Germany, Australia, Japan, Taiwan, Russia.
KEF LS50 loudspeakers are avaialble in pairs and individually.
